Happy Campers Series
Yes, we know that we’ve all just finished with the winter holidays, but it really is already time to start planning the family summer camping trip. The most popular spots book up well in advance— many six or eight months out—so now is the time to book. To help you get a jump on plans, we’ve gathered some of the choicest spots to pitch a tent across the country.

DAY ONE: FOR BEACH BUMS
Assateague Island, Maryland
Set on a barrier island just off the coast of Maryland and Virginia, Assateague combines the convenience of car camping and the beauty of white sand and clear blue surf. Besides the excellent swimming, Assateague offers easy biking trails, fishing, crabbing and kayaking. And did we mention the wild horses? Stranded on the island many years ago (some say they landed there after a Spanish ship wrecked off the coast, others believe they were just horses of early settlers who ran free), they now roam the island. This site offers practical and helpful Assateague tips from a camper who knows, and loves, the area.
