Whenever a Pokémon card accidentally tumbles out of my bag (along with a spare sock, a roll of designer duct tape and an Easter themed Pez dispenser) I always get the same response from any non-parent (or one with children under the age of 6) “I didn’t realize that Pokémon is still a thing.”
Oh yes, the franchise is still going strong. For my kids, it was their first clear, and obsessive, rite of elementary school passage. In Japan, Pokémon is still so big in Japan that All Nippon Airlines is bringing back their very popular Pokémon-themed vacations this summer. For a few select dates this summer, fans can climb aboard a Pokémon-themed jet, check into their Pokémon-themed hotel room and take part in special Pokémon-themed missions. My son’s comment when I showed him the Pikachu madness? “You get special EX cards, right?”
