Pack your sleeping bags, it’s time for Summer Camp. We’re going to highlight some new spots to pitch your tent (or check into your cabin) as well as some old favorites.

Wild horses on the beach at Assateague

Wild horses on the beach at Assateague

First up, we head to  Assateague Island, off the coast of Maryland and Virginia, where you can combine two of summer’s great pleasures: camping and beach time.  There’s tons to do, and beaches where you can relax and do nothing much. On this coastal island you’ll pitch your tent alongside the resident wild horses that have made this island home for hundreds of years (no one knows for sure how or when they arrived on the island).  Read more about Assateague.

Did you know...the sand on Assateague Island is high in magnetite, a naturally occurring mineral. It creates black streaks in the sand that some people mistake for oil. Throw a magnet in the sand and it will come up covered in magnetite. Read more about magnetite sand, and other natural features and creatures of Assateague on their Facebook page.
