Torn between a culture-filled city adventure and a laid-back outdoor getaway? Have them both at Louisiana’s Bayou Segnette State Park. Located 30 minutes outside  New Orleans’ French Quarter, Segnette is an inexpensive base camp for families who want a vacation with a little bit country, a little bit Café du Monde.

Plans to rebuild the park cabins washed away by Katrina are in the works, but for now Segnette offers exclusively tent and RV camping. Despite its lack of lodging options, the site is far from primitive, and outside it’s proximity to New Orleans Bayou Segnette is known (and loved) for it’s well-kept grounds and showers, it’s nature center and perhaps it’s biggest draw for locals and visitors alike looking to beat the heat, it’s rolicking wave pool. The  popular cooling off spot is just the thing to refresh after a day of city sightseeing, or to work up an appetite for a big helping of jambalaya.
