The cabins are basic, the beach anything but at these ultra-affordable vacation rentals (private oceanfront included).

Coming south off Highway 10, go west at the outskirts of traffic-clogged Panama Beach and stop short before you hit the line of hotels of Destin and you’ll find the quiet town of Grayton Beach, Florida.

No hotels, big or small, dot the streets of Grayton Beach. The lack of accommodations has slackened the tourism but spurred its funky, laid-back charm. Grayton Beach feels more like a forgotten little hamlet in the Keys than the nearby busy tourist hubs. The beaches are clean, white and perfect for swimming and sunning. The pace is one click up from reverse.

The screened in porch is an important touch.

By far the best deal in town, and perhaps across the entire Gulf, are the cabins at Grayton Beach State Park. The two bedroom, one bath condos (sleep 6) run $705 a week in low season, $775 in high. Most of the basics—sheets, towels, tp—are included in the price. Extras like toiletries and hair dryers you’ll have to bring yourself.

The cabins are set in a gated area of the state park (key code required).  Nestled in a grove of coastal pines, wifi is non-existent, cell phone spotty and other visitors rarely seen and pretty much never heard. The private beach is a short walk down a sandy path and the restaurants and shops of Grayton Beach just a mile or two outside the gates. The crowds? They’re far, far away….
