In October, you can practically hear pumpkins being scooped and sculpted all across Rhode Island as artists work non-stop to maintain their famous Jack-0-Lantern Spectacular.
It takes a lot of man hours, and a lot of gourds, to create and maintain the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular. Over the course of the month-long installation, roughly 20,000 carved pumpkins will be on display along the wetland trail of the Roger William’s Park Zoo. Unlike Rodin’s Thinker, the work of these artists won’t stand the test of time—they last maybe two weeks tops—so the pieces are continually being recarved and replaced. To keep up, Passion for Pumpkins, the team that puts on the exhibit, works almost around the clock making sure the gourds are in top form throughout the exhibit.
The theme varies from year to year. With 2014 deemed “Pumpkins from A-to-Z,” fans are eagerly anticipating just how this year’s theme will carve out. Hints are D for dinosaur and T for thinkers. Beyond the alphabet, the display will also pay homage to iconic and inspirational figures such as Mandela and Lady Diana.
The Spectacular is the result of the vision and work of John Reckner, a former mail carrier who dreamed up the idea 25 years ago.
“If you told me 25 years ago I’d still be doing this I wouldn’t think it possible,” says Reckner
One step into the Halloween fantasia, you’re instantly grateful for the effort of Reckner and his team, and you’re believing that almost anything is possible.
